The Story of the Doors

          The Doors Dr. John Built

Every story at the Regnum Dei Center begins in the same place: at the front doors.

Guests notice them before they notice anything else. They pause, run a hand along the wood and carved panels, and often ask who made them.

The answer surprises most people. The doors were shaped, in part, by a physician who had never built anything like them before, and who gave them to us as one of the last gifts of his life. This is his story.

          A Door Worth Stopping For

When Dr. John's church in Forest City built their new church santuary, the first thing he noticed was the entrance. The doors were clearly made by hand, and they seemed to say something before anyone inside had said a word.

John spent his days caring for patients, a man used to reading what lay beneath the surface. In those doors he saw care, patience, and devotion worked directly into the material. He wanted to know who had made them.

The answer led him to a local craftsman. John found him, introduced himself, and before long the two were talking about far more than woodworking.

          An Unusual Request

Dr. John had a place in mind for a second set of doors: the main building of the Regnum Dei Center, a place he loved for the promise it held in welcoming people into God's presence. He asked the artisan to make doors for the Center as a way he could help to beautify the Center.

Then he made a second request, one the craftsman had rarely heard. John didn't only want to commission the doors. He wanted to learn alongside him and help build them with his own hands.

For John, that difference mattered. A gift you pay for is generous; a gift you help make carries part of you inside it. He wanted to be part of the creation of something that would welcome people to the Center for generations.

          Learning the Craft

Over the following months, John became an apprentice. He traded his white coat for an apron in the workshop, and learned to work at the pace of the wood rather than the pace of a busy practice.

The skills did not come quickly. Hands trained for medicine had to learn new kinds of precision: selecting boards, reading the grain, measuring twice, cutting once, and starting over when a joint didn't fit. The artisan was patient, and John was a willing student. As they worked, the conversations deepened. Between the sound of saws and the smell of fresh-cut oak, they talked about faith, family, and what it means to build something that outlasts you. Piece by piece, the doors took shape, and so did a friendship.

          Three Weeks

On [DATE], the finished doors were hung at the entrance to the Center's main building. John stood back and watched people walk through what he had helped create. Three weeks later, John was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The illness moved quickly. Through it, those closest to him saw the same faith that had carried him into the workshop now carrying him home. Dr. John passed away on [DATE], surrounded by loved ones. The doors had been finished just in time.

          What the Doors Still Say

Jesus said, "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved" (John 10:9). Dr. John spent his life pointing people toward that door, in his practice, in his church, and finally in wood and iron at the entrance to this Center.

Each time we walk through those doors, we are reminded of the beautiful gift of Dr. John's life: his passion for sharing God with others, his humility in becoming a student, and his desire to leave behind a welcome for people he would never meet. His hands are part of every guest's arrival.

The next time you visit Regnum Dei, pause at the entrance. Rest your hand on the doors, say a prayer of thanks for John, and step inside knowing you were welcomed by someone who loved this place.

The Regnum Dei Center did not simply appear as a North Carolina retreat facility seeking North and South Carolina visitors. Its spark began through the spiritual fruit of a ministry from throughout the Carolinas and beyond.

Several years ago with the encouragement of a Priest actively leading men and women in the Hispanic Emaus ministry, a current and active Emmaus brother attended an Emmaus of the Carolinas retreat for the first time and was deeply affected by what God did through his experience. His conviction eventually led to the decision by his nonprofit called ArchAngel Ministries to make an extraordinary personal commitment: he donated a substantial tract of his own property for the development of a retreat facility called the Regnum Dei Center where others could encounter Christ through prayer, retreat, fellowship and the sacramental life of the Church.

What followed became a genuinely regional faith-based effort involving hundreds, if not thousands, of Emaus/Emmaus brothers and sisters throughout they Carolinas.

Emmaus brothers and sisters from throughout the Dioceses of Charleston and all over North Carolina, have freely contributed their time, talent, treasure, labor and resources to help make the Regnum Dei Center a reality. These amazing men and women have not simply been visitors to the property; they have participated in its development and helped advance the mission it now serves.

It is a place that exists, in part, because of the generosity and faith of Catholics within the Dioceses of Charleston and Charlotte. Furthermore, it is a resource for Christians everywhere. Regnum Dei was conceived with the Emmaus of the Carolinas retreat apostolate particularly in mind, but its mission is much broader.

The center is available to ministries from all over seeking a place for:
The Regnum Dei Center offers something particularly valuable: a dedicated ministry environment close enough to be practically accessible, yet sufficiently removed from ordinary routines to provide the quiet and sacred space necessary for retreat and spiritual renewal.

A strong personal witness story of faith producing concrete action

The retreat center is a story about men and women who attended a Catholic lead (often non denominational) retreat called Emaus/Emmaus and experienced God working powerfully in their lives then turning that experience into action:

          That experience produced conviction.

          Conviction produced generosity.

          Generosity sustains the ministry.

That ministry inspires Christians from the Carolinas and beyond to contribute their own time, talent and treasure.
